A wall-mounted paper roll — but the right way up.

The paper feeds from the bottom, so when you run out of space you get more underneath what you just wrote. Used paper rolls itself away into the archive at the top. No tearing. No throwing. No guilt. Plenty of shelf space.

We pitched it to IKEA (see video). While we wait for a reply you can buy it here!

Why bottom-feed?

Every other wall-mounted paper roll feeds from the top. Which means when you run out of space, you have to tear off what you wrote and start again.

That's a small thing every day. It adds up to a lot of guilt.

Väggrulle does it the other way around. New paper feeds up from the bottom, so you write top-to-bottom like a normal page — and when you reach the end, you just pull more paper up. The old content rolls up at the top into your archive.

You never need to erase. You never need to throw anything away. The used paper tidies itself away, and you decide what to do with it the next time you change the roll.

What it's for

A central hub for your home or office.

  • A daily to-do list that doesn't run out of space.
  • A daily to-do list that doesn't run out of space.
  • A family message board that becomes a family scrapbook.
  • A receipts archive — tape them to the paper, they roll up with the rest.
  • A meeting wall, a brainstorm wall, a "what do we have for dinner" wall.
  • A drawing surface that's always blank when the kids find it.

What's on it

Two shelves. The big one at the bottom keeps what you reach for: pens, post-its, a coffee cup, your phone. The small one at the top keeps what you don't want the kids to reach: permanent markers, sharp things, secrets.

Two magnets hold the paper in place.

What it's made of

  • Four pieces of 0.8mm powder-coated steel — laser cut, folded, corners rounded.
  • Four plastic spacers, two magnets, four painted screws.

You'll also need a roll of paper. (Yes, the IKEA Måla fits. Yes, that's intentional.)

Flat-packs into one box. Installs in about ten minutes — instructions here.

Sizes & mounting

Mount it high. Mount it low. Make it tall or short. Narrow enough to fit on a kitchen cabinet door if you want to.

What's in the box

  • 4 × powder-coated steel parts
  • 4 × plastic spacers
  • 2 × magnets
  • 4 × painted screws
  • 1 × instruction sheet

What's not in the box

  • Roll of paper, 45 cm wide - we suggest IKEA's Måla. (If you can't source it we can probably help - get in touch).

Care

Wipe with a damp cloth. Replace the paper roll when runs out — you'll know. Magnets can be dangerous - make sure the top shelf where they attach is out of reach of children.

A note on the name

Väggrulle is Swedish for "wall roll". We had grander ideas (Tankeskrift, Konstyta, Mjölkbrödägg) but this one stuck.

Why we made it

Because the orthodox version was wrong, and once we built ours we couldn't go back. We've been using one at home every day for ages.

We pitched it to IKEA on YouTube. While we wait for the call, you can have one.
